Roberts, Bruce, 1930-....

Bruce Stuart Roberts was born on February 4, 1930 in Mount Vernon, N.Y. He graduated from New York University in 1951 and attended the University of Florida in 1954. During the Korean War, Roberts served in the United States Air Force (1951-53). In 1957, he married writer Nancy Correll (b. 1924). Roberts began his career as a reporter with the Tampa Tribune (1954-55). Following a stint (1956-58) as editor and publisher of the Lumberton Post, Lumberton, N.C. and Scottish Chief, Maxton, N.C., he served as a staff photographer for The Charlotte Observer (1959-61) and director of photography for Wilmington, Del., newspapers (1962-63). Since 1963, Roberts has been a free-lance photographer for magazines and books. He has been named Southern Photographer of the Year (1959, 1961) and his book, Where Time Stood Still (1970), was chosen by the New York Times editorial board as one of the outstanding books of 1970.
