Schulenburg, A. C. (August Carl), 1879-1964.

August Carl Schulenburg (1879-1964) was born shortly after his German father had moved to South Africa to serve as a medical missionary. Schulenburg spent the first two decades of his life in South Africa, and he was raised speaking both German and Afrikaans. The Anglo-Boer War began when he was twenty years old, and Schulenberg fought alongside the Boer forces against the British troops. In 1901, he was captured by the British and sent to a prisoner of war camp in Bermuda.

Upon his release at the conclusion of the war in 1902, Schulenburg decided to visit a few of his family members who had emigrated to the United States. While staying with his uncle in Missouri, Schulenburg decided to study medicine at the Washington University Medical Department in St. Louis in 1903. Schulenburg graduated in 1906, and then served a year-long internship at the St. Louis Mullanphy Hospital.
