The Atlanta Ballet originated as the Dorothy Alexander Dance Art Group, founded in 1929, by Dorothy Moses Alexander, who was born (1904) and died (1986) in Atlanta, Ga.
The Atlanta Ballet was known as the Atlanta Civic Ballet (1941-1967), before merging with the Atlanta Municipal Theater (1967). Dorothy Alexander was artistic director (1929-1962), owner (1929-1968), principal teacher (1929-1958), and administrator (1929-1968) of the Ballet, and was instrumental in the formation of the Southeastern Regional Ballet Association, 1955 (SERBA), and the National Association for Regional Ballet, ca. 1957 (NARB).
