Mitchell, H. Walton (Howard Walton), 1867-1943
H. Walton Mitchell graduated from the Pennsylvania State College in 1890 before pursuing a career in law. As an undergraduate, Mitchell played a major role in the organization in 1887 of the Free Lance, predecessor to the Daily Collegian newspaper, and in the establishment of La Vie yearbook, first published in 1889 as a junior class annual. He was one of the founders of Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Theta Pi fraternity at Penn State in 1888. Twelve years after graduation, he became the first alumnus to be elected to Penn State's Board of Trustees, serving as its chair (1914-1929). As a jurist, he served three terms as judge of the Orphan's Court of Allegheny County (1919-1939).
