American Lutheran Church (Livingston, Mont.)

Work in the Livingston area began by Norwegian Lutheran pastors back in 1892, but it was not until February 21, 1905 that the congregation was organized. In 1906 Martin Rostum was chosen president of the congregation and was in charge as the pastors were living so far away. Land was purchased and a church was erected at the present site. First services were held on October 16, 1907 in that building. From 1906-1920 there were several pastors who served the congregation from other cities. In 1919 the women of the congregation were first given the right to vote and in 1923, the pastor was given permission to preach for six months in the English language. In 1927 the congregation’s name was changed from Our Saviour’s to American Lutheran Church.

In 1945 the Moller pipe organ was purchased and the facilities enlarged to accommodate increase of Sunday School activities. One annex was completed in 1951 and another in 1962. In 1983 American Lutheran, Redeemer Lutheran (Livingston) and Shield’s River (Wilsall) joined to form the Trinity Lutheran Parish
