In July 1974 a Consultation of LCMS-Related Lutheran Churches in Asia met to discuss the growing dissatisfaction with what they saw as increased interference and repression by the LCMS Board for Missions. At this meeting Asian church leaders pledged strong support for the General Conference of the Hong Kong Mission as the official representative of the LCMS in the Hong Kong-Macao area. Its legitimacy had been questioned by a group of dissident Chinese congregations and pastors, who formed a breakaway group known as the Hong Kong-Macao Evangelical Lutheran Church. After months of contentious debate, charges and countercharges, negotiations, in October 1975 the Hong Kong-Macao Evangelical Lutheran Church voted to disband. The General Conference of the Hong Kong Mission voted to welcome back the breakaway church.
