Drake, Victor M.

Constructed at the Continental Iron Works in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, the U.S.S. Monitor was the first ironclad warship commissioned by the United States Navy during the American Civil War. The Monitor is most famous for its battle against the ship Virginia (formerly the C.S.S. Merrimack ) of the Confederate States Navy during the Battle of Hampton Roads in 1862. John Lorimer Worden, a resident of Westchester County, New York, was the ship's commander.
