Stones, E.L.G. (Edward Lionel Gregory), 1914-

Edward Lionel Stones was born in Croydon on 4 March 1914 , the son of Edward Edison Stones and Eleanor Gregory . In 1947 he married Jeanne Marie Beatrice . They had a daughter and a son. Stones was educated at Glasgow High School and went on to study at the University of Glasgow . After graduating from Glasgow with a First Class degree in English he went to Balliol College, Oxford to continue his studies. Whilst at Oxford he turned to Medieval History, graduating in 1939 with a first class in History. He returned to Glasgow University to become an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of History. However the war intervened and Stones joined the Royal Signals in 1940 . He was made a Major in 1943 , and passed most of the war in service in India .

In 1945, he returned to Glasgow University and continued as a Lecturer in History. He obtained his PhD from Glasgow in 1950 . The following year he was promoted to Senior Lecturer in Medieval History. Five years later, in 1956 , he was elected to the newly created chair of Medieval History, which he held until his retirement in 1978 .
