Shepard, John D., 1816-1884.
James D. Shepard was born in Cobleskill, Schoharie County, N.Y. in 1816. He came to Buffalo in 1840 and established the Shepard Iron Works. In 1840 he married Clarissa M. Joy, daughter of Thaddeus Joy, who had settled in Buffalo in 1823. Thaddeus Joy was a friend of DeWitt Clinton and an early proponent of the Erie Canal. After the completion of the canal, he engaged in the forwarding business, and resided in Albany for many years.
