The State Planning Office was established within the Department of Finance and Administration by a legislative act in 1959 (1959 Laws of N.M., Chp. 255, Sec. 1). In 1977 a legislative act abolished the State Planning Office and transferred its functions to the newly-established State Planning Division of the Department of Finance and Administration (1977 Laws of N.M., Chp. 247, Sec. 18). In 1983 a legislative act abolished the State Planning Division and transferred its functions to the newly-established Governor's Office of Policy and Planning (1983 Laws of N.M., Chp. 296, Sec. 5 and 30). The Governor's Office of Policy and Planning's purpose is to provide overall plans for New Mexico state government in areas such as economic development, education, natural resources, and energy.
