Evangelical Synod of Maryland and Virginia organized in 1820; 1829 Virginia churches formed the Evangelical Synod of Virginia; 1922 the Lutheran Synod of Virginia was formed by the merger of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Virginia, Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Southwestern Virginia, and Evangelical Lutheran Holston Synod; 1928-1962 known as Lutheran Synod of Virginia of the United Lutheran Church in America; 1962-1987 known as Virginia Synod of the Lutheran Church in America; since 1987 known as Virginia Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; synod office is in Salem, Va.
