American Indian Development was "a project concerned with helping the Indian people of the United States to find and use the material resources and the leadership which exists in their communities." 1953 was its second full year of operations. The project was "devoted to self-help projects and leadership training in Indian communities." Initiated by the National Congress of American Indians, it was funded by The Field Foundation in the first four years.
