Julius Willard (ca. 1793-1884), a teacher, shopkeeper & abolitionist in Carrollton, Alton, Jacksonville & Quincy, Ill.; Frances Langdon Willard (1797-1854), Julius' sister, a Christian teacher & principal in Vt., Conn., Ala., Pa., N.Y., & Ill.; Samuel Willard, Julius' son, a college student and abolitionist, and later a physician, Civil War veteran, teacher and author in Jacksonville, Springfield & Chicago, Ill.; and other family relatives and ancestors in New England & Illinois.

Julius Willard was born in Vermont into a family that had been in New England from the 17th century. In Jacksonville, Julius & Samuel operated the Underground Railroad; in 1843, both were convicted of harboring a runaway slave.
