Native of Idaho; graduate of Oberlin College and Columbia University College of Journalism; sergeant, 45th Field Artillery Battalion, 8th Infantry Division, stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C.; second lieutenant, 6th Engineer Combat Batallion, stationed in Dutch New Guinea and the Philippines; recepient of Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Silver Star; postwar occupation duty in Korea.
