Fort Simcoe established in 1856 on the Dalles Military Road, 38 miles southwest of present day Yakima. It remained an army post until 1859 when it became the headquarters for the Yakima Indian Agency. It also housed an Indian school; abandoned in 1923 but restored in 1953 by Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. Name also found: Fort Simcoe Indian Agency.
