Cowley, Stephen, 1881-1946

Stephen Cowley was born in Ft. Lincoln, North Dakota on February 5, 1881. He grew up to become a lawyer, after attending both the University of North Dakota and the University of Wisconsin. After graduating and practicing in North Dakota for a time, he moved to Great Falls, Montana. In addition to being a successful lawyer in his private practice, Cowley held a rank of major as judge advocate during both the Spanish-American War and World War I. Sometime during his military service in World War I, he contracted encephalitis. This disease plagued him for the last twenty years of his life. Cowley died of a fall down his stairs on July 5, 1946.
