Wherry, Elizabeth, 1893-1956.

Elizabeth Wherry, author, columnist, farm wife, editor, and sorority house mother, was born Jan. 29, 1893 to Jacob and Ella Cripliver in Tipton, Iowa. Wherry was widely recognized as an Iowa writer whose chief subjects were rural life and farming. She gave other farm women advice on how to cope with the isolation and hard work in order to live more graciously.

Wherry is perhaps best known for her column, "Country air" which she wrote for thirty years for the magazine, Wallace's farmer. She was also a prolific author of children's literature. Later in life, after her husband's death in 1948, Wherry became a house mother first in Iowa City, Iowa and then in Mount Vernon, Iowa. She moved to Anamosa, Iowa where she died in 1956 of a heart attack.
