Catholic Church. Pope (1800-1823 : Pius VII)
Pius VII was born Count Barnaba Chiaramonti, entered a Benedictine monastery at age 16 and through the intervention of Pius VI moved upward in positions in the Catholic Church. He was created a cardinal in 1785 and became pope in 1800. Pius VII was continuiously in conflict with Napoleon until the latter's fall in 1815 after the Battle of Waterloo. -- Giovanni Battista Quarantotti was created a cardinal by Pius VII in 1816 and appointed as Perfect of the Congregation for Propagation of the Faith in May 1820.
