Smith, J. Stewart (British artist, active 18th-19th centuries)

J. S. Smith and his daughter Carrie lived in Randolph, Orange County, Vermont. He may have been a physician as he mentions visiting the sick. His son Francis B. was a dentist in New York City; his home was at 11 Waverly Place, off Broadway. Francis was married to Elizabeth, also called Lizzie, whose maiden name may have been Richardson as a Mrs. Richardson lived with them. They had a young son called Frankie. The John mentioned in the letters was another of Smith's sons. It is unclear whether the J.S. frequently mentioned was this John or their cousin James Salein (or Saleim).

From the description of Letters, 1861-1862. (Winterthur Library). WorldCat record id: 261233312
