Livingston, William, 1723-1790

William Livingston was born in Albany, New York, on November 30, 1723. After graduation from Yale College in 1741, he practiced law in New York. In 1772 he moved to Elizabethtown (now Elizabeth), New Jersey. He served as a member of the Continental Congress from 1774-1776 and also served as a brigadier general in the New Jersey militia. From 1776 until his death in 1790 Livingston served as governor of New Jersey. In 1787 he was a delegate to the Federal Constitutional Convention and was a signer of the Constitution.
