Hamerton, Philip Gilbert, 1834-1894?

Philip Gilbert Hamerton was an English artist, critic, and author, perhaps best known for writing The Intellectual Life. Born in Lancashire, his mother died in childbirth, and Hamerton was raised by aunts. Although prepared for Oxford, he eschewed higher education, and studied painting, specializing in landscapes. He found himself more suited to writing, and wrote essays, articles, criticism, autobiography, and even a few novels, writing about many topics but chiefly painting. He was also editor and co-proprietor of The Portfolio, an innovative and influential journal that published drawings and literature chosen to appeal to a cultivated public.
