Rochester Institute of Technology. Evening Student Association,
The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Evening Student Association (ESA) was formed in 1964 as the Evening College Student Association. The group was created to serve a similar role for the evening students as the day student's Student Association. Its first event, a dance titled "Getting to Know You," was held on May 22, 1964. Over the next few years, the group sponsored various events for RIT's evening school students including beer and pizza socials, Christmas parties, Valentine's Day dances, and summer picnics. In addition to organizing social activities for students, the group provided a variety of services. For instance, the ESA sponsored a registration orientation each fall, published a regular newsletter, compiled a yearbook, and offered a math lab to students needing help in any mathematics course. For a $1 membership fee, any evening student could participate in these activities and services. The organization's stated purposes were: to foster a spirit of identity between the evening student body and the Institute, to encourage and uphold a spirit of respect and cooperation between the evening student body and the administrative and faculty segments of the Institute, to represent evening student interests and welfare through service as an organized group for the expression of evening student views, to serve as the agency through which problems or ideas of the evening student may be brought to the attention of the appropriate Institute officers, and to provide opportunities for personal growth through leadership, group interaction, service, social, and cultural activities. The ESA continued to operate at RIT into the 1970s.
