Cornwallis, Mary Harris, ca. 1755-ca. 1835.
Mary (Harris) Cornwallis, author, married Reverend William Cornwallis (1751-1827), rector of Elham and Wittersham in Kent. She wrote and published several religious works, including Observations, Critical, Explanatory and Practical on the Canonical Scriptures (1817) and A Preparation for the Lord's Supper...Intended for the Use of Ladies (1826). She had two daughters, Sarah Cornwallis (1779-1803), and Caroline Francis Cornwallis (1786-1858). The latter became a feminist author of works on Christianity, education, and women's rights; she also wrote an encyclopedic compilation titled Philosophical Theories and Philosophical Experience, by a Pariah (1842), and a novel, Pericles (1846).
