Teacher and scholar of East Asian studies, specializing in the history, political development, ethnic minorities, and languages of China and Mongolia. Born December 14, 1928, in Berlin, Germany. Educated at the University of Wisconsin (BA, 1954; MA, 1958; PhD, 1963). Member of the faculty of the University of the Philippines, 1964-65; University of Washington, 1965-69; Western Washington University, 1969-93. Professor Emeritus of History and Political Science, Western Washington University.
