Rathbun, Benjamin, 1790-1873.
Buffalo, N.Y. businessman and entrepreneur. Began his career as proprietor of Buffalo's Eagle Tavern in 1821. Accused, with his brother Lyman and two nephews, of forging endorsements, tried twice, convicted in 1838, and sentenced to serve five years in the state prison. He returned to Buffalo, but later moved to New York City, where he kept the Broadway Hotel, at the corner of Broadway and Forty-Second Street. He died in Fort Washington, N.Y. on 19 July 1873.
