Soldier's Relief Hospital.

The Soldier's Relief Hospital opened in Charleston on December 16, 1861. The Soldier's Relief Association, an organization of Charleston women founded to provide Confederate soldiers with clothing, bedding, and hospital supplies, created the hospital. The hospital was located in the Trapman Street private hospital of Dr. Julian John Chisolm. Dr. William Huger was the first superintendent of the Soldier's Relief Hospital, and operated under the jurisdiction of the Medical Director of the Confederacy. In 1864, the hospital was relocated to the property of John Tucker at the intersection of Cooper and Drake streets. The hospital remained in operation for the duration of the Civil War. After the war ended, the hospital became the Tucker Hospital, and provided care for the poor.
