Young, Lafayette, 1848-1926.

Republican senator, newspaper publisher and editor, war correspondent. Lafayette Young served in the Iowa Senate from 1874 to 1880, and from 1886 to 1888. He was appointed to fill a vacancy in the United States Senate and served from 1910 to 1911. He founded and published the Atlantic Telegraph newspaper (1871-1890). He established the Des Moines Capital newspaper and served as its editor from 1890 to 1926. Young was a war correspondent during the Spanish American War and World War I (1915). He was chairman of the Iowa branch of the Council of National Defense during World War I and was made a knight of the Order of Leopold II of Belgium in recognition of his fundraising efforts in Iowa for the children of Belgium.
