Attorney, journalist, Detroit postmaster, U.S. Senator (1837-1841).
Born in Danville, Ky., Dec. 21, 1789. Editor of paper in Hagerstown, Md.; studied law; admitted to the bar, 1814; private in War of 1812; edited paper in Philadelphia, 1816-1832; moved to Mich. Territory; Postmaster of Detroit April 11, 1831-June 18, 1836; elected to U. S. Senate, 1637-1841; State Senate, 1841; State House of Representatives, 1842; U. S.
