Wichers, Wynand, 1886-1971
In 1909 Wichers graduated from Hope College and was appointed instructor in English and Latin at Hope Preparatory School. In 1913 he became professor of history at Hope College. He received an M.A. from the University of Michigan in 1918. In 1925 Wichers resigned from Hope to become cashier of the First State Bank of Holland but continued his association with the college as a member of its Board of Trustees. In 1931 he returned to Hope as its sixth president, a position he held until his resignation in 1945. During his presidency, Wichers was elected as President of the General Synod of the Reformed Church in America (1937); he was the first layman to hold this office. In 1945 Wichers became Vice-President at Western Michigan University where he remained until his retirement in 1956.
