Underwood, George, 1816-1859
George Underwood was born in Cooperstown, New York, on January 4, 1816, the son of A. Underwood. He had at least one sister, Jane, and lived primarily in Auburn, New York. After graduating from Hamilton College in 1838, Underwood moved to Skaneateles, New York. He later returned to Auburn, where he practiced law. Underwood served in the New York State Assembly from 1850-1852, and as Auburn mayor in 1854. He and his wife, Charlotte Platt (b. 1817), had three children who survived to maturity: Jonathan Platt; George, Jr.; and Fannie Goodrich. George Underwood died on May 24, 1859, after a trip to Cuba and South Carolina.
