Proprietors of the Town of Orwell, Vt.
Town of Orwell, Vt., chartered in 1763 and its lands granted to 64 men; in Jan. 1799 the proprietors appointed a committee of 5 to survey and lay out the town in regular lots, after which a map was created and a clerk, Ebenezer Wilson, appointed. On Sept. 30, 1799, the proprietors met and voted to appoint a committee to receive all deeds and claims to land in Orwell, to register the deeds, and ascertain where each division lay. When the job was completed, the new divisions were accepted by the proprietors and land holders of Orwell as legal property boundaries in the town. Subsequently the proprietors dissolved and regular governing duties were assumed by elected and appointed officials of the Town of Orwell.
