Wadud, Amina
American-born Mary Teasley converted to Islam and, by 1974, had changed her name to Amina Wadud. She become fluent in Arabic and earned her Ph. D. from the University of Michigan in Arabic and Islamic Studies. After graduation, Wadud spent time studying and teaching in both Libya and Malaysia. While in Malaysia, she co-funded Sisters in Islam. In 1992 she accepted a position as Professor of Religion and Philosophy at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where she worked until 2008. Wadud's research interests include gender and Qur'anic studies.
