Powers, John J., 1904-1989.

John J. Powers was born on January 14, 1904, in Providence, Rhode Island. He came to Butte with his parents, John J. and Mary Maher Powers in 1905. John graduated from Butte High School in 1922. He corresponded with the Landon School of Cartooning in Cleveland, Ohio, and also studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and the Chicago Art Institute.

From 1925 to 1938, Powers was employed as a trammer, motorman and miner on Butte Hill. His cartoons featuring miners at work appeared in The Anode, Anaconda Company's publication. From 1942 to 1969, Powers was the artist for the Department of Safety, Anaconda Company. During World War II his cartoons became known to both American and overseas readers as he promoted drives for war bonds, scrap collection and charities. Powers also free-lanced for the Montana American, Butte Miner, Butte Daily Post and the Montana Standard.
