Smart, William (1853-1915: Professor of political economy, University of Glasgow)
Professor William Smart, was born in Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1853 . He received his MA from the University of Glasgow, Scotland in 1882 . According to matriculation records, he studied moral philosophy and mathematics in 1880-1881, and in 1881-1882, he studied natural philosophy. It appears he received his LLD in 1893 and his DPhil in 1896 . He lectured at the University of Glasgow at this time, so it would appear that he obtained his qualifications there. In 1896, Smart was appointed Adam Smith Professor of Political Economy at the University of Glasgow. He died in 1915 .
