Dubuque, Julien, 1762-1810
Born in St. Pierre les Becquets, Quebec, Canada, January 10, 1762. Settled in Prairie du Chien, Wis., 1785. Secured permission from Fox Indians to work lead mines west of the Mississippi River in 1788. Married Potosa, daughter of Chief Peosta and was adopted in the tribe. The Spanish Governor of Louisiana confirmed the grant. Before his death he sold his rights to Auguste Chouteau of St. Louis but the claim was not allowed by the U.S. Government. Litigation went on for many years, ending in a decision for the government. Dubuque died March 28, 1810 and was buried in an Indian mound on a promontory overlooking the city of Dubuque.
