Shiras, George, 1859-1942
Born in Allegheny, Pa., George Shiras III attended Cornell University and received his law degree from Yale in 1883. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives for the Pittsburgh area from 1903 to 1905. While a representative Shiras advocated for unified federal supervision of health matters. He worked closely with the Committee of One Hundred, a select group which was part of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and formed primarily to lobby for a national department of health.
