Politician, of Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey; born in Redding, Conecticut, February 5, 1800; resident of Albany, New York, 1805-1824, and of New York City, 1824-1834; removed to Jersey City in 1834; elected in 1838 to first of three consecutive terms as (first) mayor of Jersey City; served in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1847-1849; died December 8, 1874.
