Phyllis Wheatley YWCA

The Phyllis Wheatley Branch of the Indianapolis YWCA was established in 1923 as the first and only independent black YWCA in America and was named after a famous Afro-American poet. By 1928, the organization was located at 601 West Street and became a hub of cultural and educational activity. The organization offered concerts, plays, and various seminars and conferences, as well as practical classes and recreation. The branch closed in 1959.
