Speas, Jan Cox
Jan Cox Speas (1925-1971), short story writer, novelist, and teacher, was born in Raleigh, N.C. and graduated from the Woman's College (UNCG) in 1945 where she studied creative writing with Hiram Haydn. After receiving her M.A. in English (UNCG) in 1964, she began teaching at Guilford College, Greensboro, N.C. She was well known for her historical romances during the 1950's and 1960's. Following her death from a heart attack, Avon Publications brought out paperback editions of her romances. By 1978 there were more than a million copies of her books in print.
