Western Foundation (Minneapolis, Minn.).

The Western Foundation was incorporated on June 12, 1939 to support "religious, charitable, scientific, or educational purposes or for the prevention of cruelty to children or animals, but expressly excluding from its purposes the carrying on of propaganda or otherwise attempting to influence legislation" [Western Foundation articles of incorporation, 1939]. The founding trustees were Bertha Boynton Bean, Atherton Bean (Francis Atherton Bean III), and Bertha Bean Flinsch. The foundation's first president was Atherton Bean. On August 18, 1966 the Western Foundation was merged with the F.A. Bean Foundation, a separate foundation created by Francis Atherton Bean, Sr.
