William Polk Longmire Jr. was born on Sept. 14, 1913 in Sapulpa, OK; AB, Univ. of Oklahoma, 1934; MD, Johns Hopkins Univ., 1938; surgeon, Johns Hopkins hospital (1946-48); successively instructor, asst. professor, assoc. professor of surgery (1943-48), then professor of surgery, UCLA; chairman of the dept., 1948-76; chairman, American Board of Surgery, 1961-62; fellow (1961-62), regent (1962-71), chairman of the board of regents (1969-71), and president (1971-73) of the American College of Surgeons; author of Starting from scratch : the early history of the UCLA Department of Surgery (1984).
