Wouthuysen, Siegfried A., 1916-1996
Physicist. Born in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, he studied at Leiden University prior to World War II. After the war he received a scholarship to study with Robert Oppenheimer. He received his PhD in 1948 from the University of California at Berkeley. He returned to the Netherlands in 1949 and joined the newly established Instituut voor Theoretische Fysica of the University of Amsterdam as professor of physics; he continued to work here until 1984. He also served on the Scientific Policy Committee of CERN in the early 1960s, and served on the Pugwash Committee and contributed to the Pugwash Statement of 1962.
