Lawrence, David Leo, 1889-1966

David Leo Lawrence was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on June 18, 1889, and was educated at the University of Pittsburgh. Lawrence's career in politics saw him serve as Secretary to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania under Governor George Earle from 1934-1939. In 1945 Lawrence was elected Mayor of Pittsburgh, a position he held for 14 years until 1959 when he was elected Governor of Pennsylvania. After serving one term as Governor, Lawrence stepped down in 1963 to become a special assistant to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson and remained in that capacity until his death in 1966. During his lifetime Lawrence also served as the Chairman of the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, member of the Democratic National Committee, member of the Board of Directors of the Carnegie Institution, and served on the Board of Trustees of Point Park Junior College and the University of Pittsburgh. Lawrence died in Pittsburgh on November 21, 1966.
