Sheifer, Jeanette

Jeanette Sheifer (1893-1979) was born in Rochester, New York. She graduated from college in Montreal, Canada, and worked there before moving to Cleveland, Ohio. Beginning with the aid of only one assistant and a custodian, she was the co-organizer and first superintendent of the Cleveland Jewish Day Nursery. The nursery accepted children from infancy to age 14 from 1921-1946. She was also involved in civic work, street organizing, and intergroup relations. She was a member of the Women's Zionist Organization and the Cleveland Association for Nursery Education. She also helped support two homes for the aged in Israel. She died in 1979 at the age of 86.
