Scientist, academic, administrator. Led British team working on the atomic bomb project at Oak Ridge, Tennessee 1944-1949. Research Director, ICI General Chemicals Division to 1949; foundation Professor of Chemical Engineering, New South Wales University of Technology 1950-1953, University Director 1953-1954 and Vice-Chancellor 1955-1969 (the University became the University of New South Wales in 1958); Chairman, Australian Atomic Energy Commission 1957-1972; Chairman, Sydney Opera House Trust 1969-1975.
