Gardner, J.B.

Solomon Nunes Carvalho was born in South Carolina of a Sephardic Jewish family. He studied portrait painting in Philadelphia and later became a daguerreotype photographer. In 1853-54 he served as official artist and photographer on John Charles Fremont's expedition from Missouri to Utah to secure a transcontinental railroad route across the Rocky Mountains. All of his plates and prints from the voyage were lost in a fire. He lived in California briefly, operating daguerreotype studios in both Los Angeles and San Francisco. Carvalho settled in New York City in 1860.
