The caption reads: "... Champion Hose Team of Colorado. At a tournament held at Georgetown, Colorado, under auspices of the Firemen's State Association, August 14th, 1877, the above team, being members of Boulder Hose No. 1, of Boulder, Colorado, ran with jumper weighing 1,175 pounds, and carrying 250 feet of hose, 400 feet to water plug, then unreeled 200 feet of hose, broke coupling, attached nozzle and threw water in the remarkably fast time of 34 1/2 seconds..."

The Boulder Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 was the first volunteer fire company organized in Boulder, 16 February 1875. The name was changed to Phoenix Hook and Ladder Company later that same year. Boulder Hose Company No. 1 was organized 13 July 1875, and A. J. Macky Hose Company No. 2 on 5 January 1877. Until 1898, hose carts and hook and ladder wagons were man-hauled. In that year the first horse team was bought by the city, and Robert May became the first paid fire chief.
