George C. Shattuck Observatory
Dartmouth College purchased a telescope in 1846 and installed it in Ira Young's garden in 1848. In 1852 Dr. George C. Shattuck of Boston became interested in improving the facilities of the Department of Natural Philosophy. Designed by Ami B. Young, the building was completed in 1854. Young selected equipment for the observatory: barometers, thermometers, hygrometers, anemometers, and rain gauges. The Smithsonian Institution began collecting national meteorological data in 1849. Prof. Young sent monthly reports to the Smithsonian from 1853 to 1857. Charles Augustus Young was appointed to the Appleton Professorship in 1865, he also oversaw the meteorological observations started by his father. Dartmouth began supplying voluntary monthly reports to the National Weather Bureau in 1892 and continues to do so. Other Dartmouth astronomy faculty also oversaw the meteorological observations, John Merrill Poor and Richard Halsey Goddard. Prof. Goddard initiated extensive use of recording charts and transcribed many observations onto data forms.
