Sharpless, Isaac, 1848-1920
Isaac Sharpless. Educator, born in Chester Co., Penn., graduated from Harvard in 1873 and received a Sc. D from the University of Pennsylvania in 1883. He rose from instructor in mathematics to Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy and Dean and President (1887-1917) at Haverford College. He resigned to become Dean of T. Wistar Brown Graduate School. He wrote text books on astronomy, geometry, English, and education and volumes on Quakerism, Pennsylvania history, and American colleges, among others. He resided in Haverford, Penn.
