Grew, Joseph C. (Joseph Clark), 1880-1965

Grew was a U.S. diplomat and author. He was attached to embassies in Egypt, Mexico, Russia, Germany, and Austria (1904-1916); secretary-general to the U.S. delegation at the Paris Peace Conference; minister to Denmark (1920) and to Switzerland (1921-1923); negotiator at the Lausanne Conference on Near Eastern Affairs (1922-1923); under secretary of state (1924-1927, 1944-1945); ambassador to Turkey (1927-1932) and to Japan (1932-1941); special assistant to the secretary of state (1942); and director of the Office of Far Eastern Affairs (1944). In retirement he remained active on national boards and commissions.
